I would expect most British people to know exactly what a Wetherspoons is but I imagine they will have passed most foreign visitors by. This tip isn’t just for cheap Brighton, it’s a tip for cheap Britain!
JD Wetherspoon is a chain of pubs that span the country, they are not the best pubs by any stretch of the imagination although they serve a decent range of ales and passable food.
The reason they get mentioned in cheap Brighton? Wetherspoons is one of the cheapest ways you can eat out. There are always offers on such as two for one or a meal and a pint for a fiver. The drinks are also great value, I doubt you can get a pint for any less!
There are two in Brighton and one in Hove although I would avoid the most centrally located one it is not a great location for a meal!
‘The West Quay‘ is down in the marina, it has great views and is a pleasant pub. This is the one I would recommend for a night out, and the Marina is a slightly out of town location you may not have considered visiting otherwise.
‘The Bright Helm‘ is the one to avoid unless you like being in the company of noisy teenagers and drunk football hooligans.
‘The Cliftonville‘ is a fair way out of town unless you are staying in Hove, in which case its right in the centre and is pleasant enough, being on George Street which is a pedestrianised shopping area. It does however suffer a bit from a common Wetherspoons affliction, cheap beer sometimes attracts cheap beer drinkers.
More information on the Wetherspoons website.
China China is a very popular and cheap Brighton Chinese restaurant with a good and varied menu. Expect to pay £6 to £7 for a main course, a great selection of dishes. Particularly recommended are the duck pancakes and dim sum.
The place is normally buzzing, the atmosphere is very informal and you will find a good mix of tourists, students, locals and members of the Chinese community. This is not a place for a candle lit meal, it is crowded and consequently, a lazy afternoon supping green tea will not be encouraged by the staff.
Service is quick and polite. China China being so close to my house means I visit far too regularly!

There are several ghost walks round Brighton, but knowing how people don’t want to book up for things, I thought this was the most suitable to recommend as you just need to turn up and in keeping with how cheap Brighton should be, it is entertainment for under a tenner!
Brighton is a spooky old town, full of legends, it may not have been around in medieval days but it has certainly made up for it in the last couple of centuries or so, I myself have had shivers go down my back in one or two spooky locations!
So if you fancy a spooky walk of a mile or so conducted by an experienced guide, pop down to the town hall (Bartholomew Square in the South Lanes) with £6 in hand.
2008 Dates and times:
Saturdays 7pm: 5 April, 3 May, 7 June, 5 July, 2 August, 6 September, 4 October, Halloween walks Friday 31 October, 1 November, 6 December.

This has to be the strangest museum in the South on England, and thanks to it being free, it gets a mention in Cheap Brighton.
The Booth Museum was set up in the days when shooting wild animals was a great way to further our understanding of nature. The place is full of spooky tableux of stuffed birds and a collection of skeletons and dinosaur bones, it is very creepy. The smell of the place reminds me of an old school gym, it is an odd place. I am not recommending this musem for it’s collection on a scientific basis, more for it’s curiosity value, nowhere else I have been is quite like it!
