Go by bus!

For cheap Brighton outings there are several good bus routes that will get you out into the near countryside without spending a fortune. Forget tours, a return ticket is all you need.

The 77 goes from the pier to Devils Dyke high up on the downs, there is a fantastic view from up here of the whole of north Sussex and when you have had enough of being windswept, you can retreat into the pub which is nice and cozy and has reasonably priced yet decent food.

The 78 goes to Stamner park which is in the downs right by Sussex University. The park itself is lovely and there is walking to be had in all directions. You can walk to Ditchling Beacon from here. The Universities bus number 25 also drops you off at the entrance to the park although it may be harder to know when to alight.
